Get Involved in Your Chapter!

Please consider how you can serve as a chapter member of the Tau Kappa at-Large Chapter. Several committee chairs are seeking volunteers to join their committees. Please review the committees below and consider how you can join the committed group of professional nurses who make the Tau Kappa at-Large chapter a vital organization. Contact information is provided for more information.

Community Service and Fundraising Committee

The Community Service and Fundraising Committee works to carry out the mission of Sigma and its commitment to help achieve the UN Millennium Development goals as well as Tau Kappa At-Large Chapter’s strategic plan via projects that address community needs. It does this by working collaboratively with the Board of Directors to identify projects and initiatives. The committee also develops and implements projects and events that raise funds to support strategic initiatives while increasing the visibility of the Chapter. This committee works collaboratively with other committees to maximize membership participation.

Please email Lovern Shadwick, chair, at l.shadwick@hvcc.edu if you are interested in joining this committee.

Awards and Recognition Committee

The Awards and Recognition Committee requests and reviews nominations for awards and recognition relative to contributions to the profession of nursing in the following categories: research, education, practice, leadership, and mentorship. Excelsior College and Empire State College Student Scholarship applications and Lifelong Learning Scholarship applications from Chapter members are also reviewed for consideration. Based on established criteria, the committee recommends award recipients to the Board of Directors for approval.

Please email Kylie Ackerman, chair, if you are interested in joining this committee. kackerman@excelsior.edu

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee updates The Circle, produces the chapter newsletter, and maintain communications with the Colleges’ Public Relations/Communications Departments, and in doing so maintain the publication standards put forth by Sigma.

Please email Karin Pantel, chair, if you are interested in joining this committee kbpantel@yahoo.com

Membership and Mentoring (M&M) Committee

The M&M Committee promotes membership renewals and opportunities for dual and transfer membership. It also coordinates new member orientation and facilitates active engagement by all members through a mentoring program.

Please email Dawne Olbrych, Tau Kappa At-Large president at olbrychd@ellismedicine.org if you are interested in joining this committee.
Note that a Chair is needed for this committee.

Program Committee

The Program Committee plans virtual and in-person events for the Chapter. Chaired by the Vice President, this Committee meets virtually approximately four times per year.

Please email Jen Pettis, chair, at jpettis@nycap.rr.com if you are interested in joining this committee.

  • Sigma Organizational Call to Action 2023-2025

    Represent

Each biennium, Sigma installs a new president at the international level. At the 47th Biennial Convention, we proudly installed Sandra C. Garmon Bibb, DNSc, RN, FAAN, and introduced her as the 35th president of Sigma. With influence from the Board of Directors, each president presents a call to action to help guide members and chapters as we strive to fulfill our mission.

We are all leaders, and we must represent our unique selves and collective change in our shared world. Therefore, Dr. Bibb challenges us all to represent the best of our individuality and shared contributions to our profession in three ways:

REFLECT | Communicating a Caring Culture
Caring is who we are and what we do, as individuals and as a caring culture. We can and should model and reflect our commitment to care of self, care of others, and care of the environment.

Care of Self - Self-care is an individual practice and should be shaped to fit who we are, but as Sigma nurses, we all have the opportunity to reflect self-care.

Care of Others - Sigma offers members an opportunity to reflect Sigma’s inclusive, integrated art-and-science of nursing approach to developing nurse leaders anywhere to improve health care everywhere as we mobilize our skills, expertise, and experiences in our day-to-day lives and connect with others to transform global healthcare.

Care of the Environment - Sigma is committed to providing education, support, resources, and opportunities to engage in advocacy and be the change we want to see in Care of the Environment. Advocacy here means “any action that speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or defends, or pleads on the behalf of others.”

    RESPECT | Cultivating Cultural Humility
To cultivate is to acquire, develop, demonstrate, and define. As a caring culture we have an opportunity to model keys to cultivating cultural humility, as we commit to:

Listen - Through an ongoing process of compassionate self-awareness, others' awareness, self-evaluation, and self-critique.

Learn - With humility, grace, and a growth mindset, learn about others’ culture/cultural influences/identities but start with an examination of our own culture/cultural influences/identities.

Lead - Commit to a lifelong process of cultural humility; recognize power dynamics and imbalances and a desire to fix those imbalances; and develop partnerships with people and groups who advocate for others.

    RESPOND | Championing Contemporary Practice
Despite what may be going on around us,
    • professionalism,
    • perspective, and
    • perseverance
are key as we respond to the demands of modern-day nursing and represent a group of influential nurse leaders who are connected, empowered, and well-positioned to transform global healthcare and add value to the world.

Acting quickly, positively, and consistently in modeling professionalism, perspective, and perseverance represents a nursing profession and a Sigma organization in which leaders consistently act in ways that help team members to thrive, and team members consistently act in ways that help other team members to thrive. As a result, the organization can care very well for customers.

We know that recent and current disruptions to the world and to the nursing workforce, including COVID, systemic bias, burnout, violence against nurses, and staffing shortages will continue. We have yet to see what impacts artificial intelligence will have. As Sigma members we must respond to the demands of contemporary nursing practice with
     professionalism,
     perspective, and
     perseverance
with support from our Sigma community and the many resources available to us.

What does represent mean to you?
As Robin Sharma writes “… At its highest, leadership is all about adding value to the world.” Each of us can embrace the call to represent the change we want to see in the world.

We can represent by embracing our own uniqueness and the perspective we bring to our role. We can represent by helping others experience and enjoy the community and support. And we can represent by demonstrating our caring culture committed to help every nurse thrive.

Sigma has a plethora of professional development, lifelong learning, continuous relevant education, training, and alignment resources available to its members. Many of the resources are also available to nonmembers looking for opportunities to stay relevant and equipped for contemporary practice in the 21st Century.

I urge you to take advantage of all the organization has to offer as we represent together.

  • SIGMA Convention Fall 2023

Hello Tau Kappa At Large members!

Kylie and I found the Convention in San Antonio to be a great experience, with many opportunities to network, be exposed to multiple research studies, and explore all that Sigma has to offer.

    Of note, we appreciated

    ·       The Plenary call to action, reminding nurses to step outside their silos, “We can’t continue to just talk among ourselves!” The BE BOLD legacy focuses on economics, technology and conservation, and he discussed the nursing shortage, the increasing age of the world’s population, and the impact of mass migration as people move around the globe.

    ·       Research sessions we attended included

o   Latasha Powell’s research: Barriers for LPNs as they pursue RN orientation (Used Chickering’s Theory these students require support and mentoring)

o   University of Texas: Transition to Practice New Graduates to RNs (transition stages of Doing (1 – 3 months), Being (4  - 8 months), and Knowing (9 – 12 months) each transition stage is stressful. Anxiety, depression and stress peaked at 4 – 8 months and that is when they leave

o   Ohio State: Wellness Partner Program (50% of students come to campus with a mental health disorder, nursing students experience stress from their clinical practice. Program focused on health behaviors associated with wellness ]self care, nutrition, exercise, sleep]. 90% of the students who participated in the wellness program engaged in self care)

o   NYU: Inter-professional program (students work on a DEU paired with medical students.)

    ·       The closing plenary session described leading with Cause, Courage, and Curiosity to upskill and reskill the people on the team, which will increase performance and engagement. She challenged each of us to describe our WHY- to isolate why our school/department/healthcare facility exists, and then to describe how “MY JOB MATTERS BECAUSE…” She encouraged us to do that exercise with our team to build a shared vision, and enable each person on the team to engage in the process of success.

It was interesting to hear about the minor bylaws changes, and observe the pageantry of the international delegates as they entered the conference hall.

Thank you Tau Kappa for allowing us to attend.

    Dawne Olbrych and Kylie Ackerman

  • Sigma Organizational Call to Action 2021-2023

Each biennium, Sigma installs a new president at the international level. At the 46th Biennial Convention, we proudly installed Ken Dion, PhD, MSN, MBA, RN, FAAN, and introduced him as the 34th president of Sigma. Each president presents a call to action to help guide members and chapters as we strive to fulfill our mission. Going forward, this will be an organizational call to action with influence from the Board of Directors.

The organizational call to action asks us to be bold. As a profession we have a habit of talking among ourselves. We attend nursing conferences, we publish in nursing journals, and we often remain in siloes within the organizations where we are employed. This status quo cannot remain! If nothing else, the past two years have shown us how events outside of nursing force change within it. Case in point: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed global inequities in our societies, our healthcare delivery systems, and within the nursing profession. Consider COVID-19 a wake-up call. The future is coming, and it will profoundly affect nursing education, research, healthcare systems, and—ultimately—models of care.

Our profession must step outside its insular circle. We must actively collaborate with disciplines outside nursing and healthcare to influence decisions about our profession, populations, and the planet in three critical domains: economics, technology, and conservation. As we move forward in a post-pandemic world, it remains our duty as a profession to advocate to abolish inequities within societies, healthcare systems, and even within our profession. Advocacy has always been central to nursing. But how do we focus our advocacy for the future? Taking stock of our past, the present, and potential futures can help us determine how to do that.

  • GSA Manuscript Writing and Reviewer Skills Program

    Hello colleagues,

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) has offered our members an extensive Manuscript Writing and Reviewer Skills Program, and I am delighted to be able to share the recorded programs with all of you! Below is the program description. You will find recorded programs, speaker bios, and PowerPoint slides available at the webpage.

*****YOU DO NOT NEED TO REGISTER - JUST SCROLL BELOW THAT AND FIND THE RECORDED PROGRAMS ***** (Of course, you are welcome to, if you would like to do so!)

The value of publishing in gerontology extends beyond the investigator to other researchers, scholars, practitioners, and ultimately improvements in life for older adults and society alike. With this in mind, GSA is offering a live webinar series with practical advice on manuscript writing and reviewing. Graduate students and emerging professionals as well as experienced scholars who want to hone their writing and reviewing skills and become more involved in the publishing process will benefit from the hands-on practice, discussion of the “human side” of publishing, pointers from authors of manuscripts accepted by journals, and the insiders’ view with a panel of editors on what constitutes a good paper.

    Course Description

In 2021, a new National Risk Reduction goal for Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias was announced by the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary (HHS) as an update to the annual National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease. Risk factors for Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias include but are not limited to tobacco use, sleep quality, diabetes, hypertension, and physical inactivity. This update aims to reduce an aggressive 15% in the prevalence of risk factors per decade. As the federal government accelerates research on these risk factors, it is important to strengthen our infrastructure for the translation and dissemination about risk factors, interventions, and health promotion activities.
